Construction has begun for the 2014 season on the east side of the Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR). Early spring work includes on-going construction of the new Rose Creek Bridge near Rising Sun and the stabilization of two active slumps near the foot of St. Mary’s Lake. This work will preclude any vehicular and pedestrian access beyond the closure point adjacent the St. Mary River Bridge while allowing access into the St. Mary Campground. This closure is 0.8 miles from the park boundary at St. Mary, MT., and will remain in effect until further notice.

Until the entire GTSR is open, (the earliest the entire road will open, weather dependent, is June 20) the rehabilitation of 9 miles of roadway and parking areas on the east side between Rising Sun and Siyeh Bend will continue under “accelerated shoulder season construction” as prescribed by the 2003 Rehabilitation Plan/ Environmental Impact Statement.

The west side of the road will be managed under Glacier National Park’s normal road opening procedures which follow road plowing and visitor access protocols.

Project Overview

As you are most likely aware, the Going-to-the-Sun Road is undergoing an extensive rehabilitation. This multi-year project is overseen by the Federal Highway Administration in partnership with the National Park Service at Glacier National Park.

After extensive public involvement in the early 2000s, the preferred alternative selected for the park's environmental impact statement directs 'Shared Use' of the Sun Road during the core summer season (mid June to mid September), weather permitting.

Weather permitting, before and after the core season of 'Shared Use' (mid June to Mid September), road work for the project will be accelerated and prevent through traffic across the entire Sun Road.
