Going-to-the-Sun Road Construction Notice
The alpine portion of the road remains closed to vehicular traffic (October 15) until next spring. The road, weather permitting, will be reopened to cross-road traffic on June 21 at 7 a.m. For 2013, visitors should expect minor construction delays on the west side of Logan Pass above Avalanche Creek as well as between Rising Sun and Siyeh Bend on the east side.
The road is currently open between West Glacier and Lake McDonald Lodge and between St. Mary and Rising Sun. Due to changing weather conditions this time of year, call the Glacier National Park information center at 1-406-888-7800 or visit the Glacier National Park Current Road Status website.
As you are most likely aware, the Going-to-the-Sun Road (Sun Road) is undergoing an extensive rehabilitation. This multi-year project is overseen by the Federal Highway Administration in partnership with the National Park Service at Glacier National Park.
After extensive public involvement in the early 2000s, the preferred alternative selected for the park's environmental impact statement directs 'Shared Use' of the Sun Road during the core summer season (mid June to mid September), weather permitting.
Weather permitting, before and after the core season of 'Shared Use' (mid June to mid September), road work for the project will be accelerated and prevent through traffic across the entire Sun Road.
