Stevens Canyon Road, Phase II Project - Mount Rainier National Park

Construction work on Stevens Canyon Road consisted of the rehabilitation of two segments, approximately 5 miles in length. The project began at the Nisqually-Paradise Road intersection (Canyon Wye) and continued for 5 miles along Stevens Canyon Road to Stevens Creek Bridge. It also included a 5 mile segment from Backbone Ridge Viaduct to the intersection of State Route 123 at the Stevens Canyon entrance. The entire project length was within the National Park. Roadway alignment essentially matched the existing alignment with 11 foot lanes and 1 foot paved shoulders. The roadway profile grade and cross section also generally fit within the existing bench width. The rehabilitation consisted of subgrade repair, mechanically stabilized earth wall (MSE wall), reinforced soil slope wall (RSS wall), culvert replacement, guardwall reconstruction, tunnel repairs, bridge and pavement restoration. The MSE and RSS walls were located within Segment 1 with several locations of subgrade repair. Included in Segment 1 was the parking area at Reflection Lake. This parking area was widened and pedestrian access was improved. Stevens Creek Bridge and Paradise River Bridge restoration was also in Segment 1. In Segment 2, there were over 500 feet of guardwall reconstruction, repairs on two tunnels and bridge restoration on Falls Creek Bridge and Ohanapecosh Bridge. In addition to these two segments, Panther Creek Bridge on WA SR 123 was restored and a 36 inch culvert was replaced.
